Who Are Pinches Medical?
A New Year has started with promises of a positive and optimistic goal of a healthier start to the year. Have you managed to keep up with your New Year’s Resolution so far? I’d love to know down below! I was recently invited to an event at Pinches Medical in Macclesfield. It is a medical and wellbeing service that provides personalised and high-quality care for their patients.
What Is Integrative Medicine?
The event was hosted by Dr Saira Mian, who is a GP specialising in Integrative Medicine at Pinches Medical. This means she looks at your lifestyle as a whole that may affect your body, as well as biochemical reasonings. Integrative Medicine also allows the doctor to have more of a holistic outlook. Therefore, they can use different therapies and homeopathic medicines, as well as the traditional Western medicines.
What Is Detoxing?
Dr Mian talked through a presentation on how the word ‘detox’ is a word that is used as a marketing ploy. It’s a word in which people instantly think that drinking a diet tea will help to cleanse their body. I’ll hold my hand up and say I’ve fallen for it a few times myself. I started drinking green tea, as I got sucked into all of the advertisement about how it has great antioxidants. I didn’t really understand at the time all of the science behind it all. It isn’t a bad thing to have green tea and lots of blueberries in your diet. However, it won’t eliminate all the toxins in your body. This is done by changes to your lifestyle. This can be related to diet and exercise.
Rosie Tadman also joined us at the event. She is a Nutritional Therapist who specialises in Female Health. Rosie explained that if you would really like to ‘detox’ your body, eat properly! By eating properly, you’re not supposed to punish yourself for eating. If you start eating foods that provide all of the necessary nutrition, your body will start treating you better. If you’re feeling like you’re low on energy constantly, you’re probably missing vital minerals or vitamins in your diet. Having trouble sleeping at night? It may be a case of perhaps trying out yoga or practising mindfulness. This helps to calm your mind and think about the now. Rather than stressing about what you’re going to have for dinner.
There’s a Hangover Cure?
So, there is no immediate cure for hangovers. But, there are techniques you can use in order to lessen the effect of a hangover. The myth is to eat before and after drinking to ‘help soak up the alcohol’. This trick isn’t exactly wrong, but a lot of people resort to eating fast food. While fast food is obviously an easy and delicious choice, it’s full of unhealthy fats that your body struggles to process on top of the alcohol.
Once you have a drink, the liver tries to filter through the alcohol to remove the toxin as fast as possible. The alcohol is considered poisonous to the body. So, therefore it prioritises detoxifying the alcohol first. The liver normally has the job of turning food into energy for your cells. So, when it deals with the alcohol, it stops turning food into energy. This results in a drop in your blood sugar levels. This is what causes you to crave a greasy burger and cheesy chips on a night out (I know your guilty secret!).
However, if you do venture to that takeaway that opens until god knows what time in the morning… think about what I’m about to say next. Once you start eating that burger that is oozing with everything bad, it causes your blood sugar to drop even further. This is because the liver is in overload. It can’t deal with all of the unhealthy requests. It starts turning the alcohol and that takeaway into fat to be stored in the body. So, if you want to make your goal of the year to lose weight, you may not want to go on the binge all of the time! You can thank me later for all of the pounds you may save. And, that is in both weight and monetary sense!
What I Learnt
Stop drinking ‘detox’ teas and buying into ‘detox’ products and thinking a miracle will happen. The marketing world will say anything enticing to promote weight loss. It’s better to change your lifestyle, and start researching what foods you’re really putting into your body.
Binge drinking and binge eating on fast food is the worst combination! If you don’t want to wake up feeling a lot of regret, prepare yourself a healthy and nutritious dinner before you hit the town. Doesn’t matter what your friends say when they’re looking at your dinner! You know you’ll be the one with the last laugh when they text you about their horrendous hangover the next day.
